What was the line up? How good were they? (silly question)
I only saw them once in September 1976 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (part of the Royal Festival Hall) in London, it was the 'proper' line up with Phil Barlow on drums.
Highlights were the rest of the band walking off stage for George to do Jake Thackray's 'Bantam thingy', and Phil Barlow doing a bit at the end of 'Armchair Athlete'.

Hi Craig Yes I did see them live, in fact I was backstage with the band on that occasion in a voluntary role as a " Roadie ", for the band. If I remember correctly that was the same evening that Frank Sinatra was playing at the Festival Hall next door. The band were in London as part of the " Noel Gay "organisation's Fiftieth Anniversary Celebrations. It was followed by a party on board one of the River Thames Pleasure Craft, but alas the crew missed out on it through having to do the " get out ", from the Venue. As I recall it was a very enjoyable few days. Thanks Craig, for reminding me of those Days, and Happy Days they were. Regards, Kevmacker

Yes I did see them Live. Not sure where, think it was Liverpool. again the original Line up with Phil Barlow on Drums. I was only 8 at the time. I have just dug out all the old albums and am putting them onto cd. It must be 30 years since I listened to them but I can still remember all the words. That must be part of my mis-spent childhood. Fond memories of good times

Hi tanker
I travelled to as many of the Bands gigs as I could during the 70's & early 80's, but I have no recollection of Driving to Darlington, thats not to say it did not happen. Sorry I cannot be more specific, as I have said I did not attend every Concert.

I saw them live at the Market Hall Carlisle in the early 70's and following the gig I met them face to face in the Kings Head in Fisher street round the corner. They were so friendly and I managed to get them all to sign an envelope which I took home - cut out and sellotaped onto the album I had bought at the gig. I still have it to this day.

I did see them live but it was the new band and I was disappointed when it was not the original band. I have all their vinyls, cassettes and a couple of cds and I could not choose a favourite as they all my favourite. I was so happy to find this website and long may it continue

Hello there..
It’s funny isn't it, when some long years later and through new media you can look back at the old things you have done. For a long time I have missed the music of The Five Penny Piece, but occasionally I will real out the Battle of Hastings, or Big Jim to a friend or two, and I will tell them of the time, when around 1975, they played at the Preston Guild Hall in Lancashire.
How do I remember? Well, I sung with The Five Penny Piece. I was 9.
The Shadsworth Junior School Choir from Blackburn stayed up so late to perform and we did, and enjoyed each and every exciting minute – I can even visualise the stage curtains now. I will never forget I had a long red velvet dress, and we chorused on Big Jim and a few other songs, smiling as Linda was serenaded by George and her attempts to take him home to meet mother, but trying to avoid father as they climbed he stairs. I wonder did anyone ever record that show on early camera or tape?
It was one of my most precious times in my life, singing with The Five Penny Piece and I thank you. Now at 45, I’ve found your website and I am enjoying that time again listening to the music I loved so much. With regret, the then love of my life (blush) Eddie has sadly died but I will never forget his warm smile and comic face.
So, well done, ee by gum folks – its nice to see you again.

I went to see them live in about 1978 at the Lyceum Theatre in Crewe. I was an impressionable 14 year old at the time and developed a bit of a teenage crush on the lovely Linda as a result!! .... Sleep peacefully, lass!

Sleep peacefully, lass! Rob S I saw the band many years ago at the ABC cinema in Wigan. My abiding memories are of a band performing brilliantly under trying circumstances. It had been a freezing cold nigh, and the heating system was on the blink. It was only as the group were about to close the concert, that the place began to heat up. Someone must have put a bob in the meter. Great night.

Hi,
Just to say that my boyfriend (from Ashton-u-Lyne) took me to see the band twice at the Broadoak and once at the Free Trade Hall in the mid 1970s. I was hooked from the start. Don't remember too much detail but do recall seeing them sitting round a table before a show and hello to them. The shows were, of course, excellent. Haven't given their songs much thought for a long time but recently I had 'Winter Sun' going round in my head (one of my favourites). An evening spent exploring their songs on You Tube eventually led me here. I'm now listening to the recently acquired 'On Stage' cd and reliving so many happy memories. I was so sorry to hear that Lynda passed away fairly recently.
