I am Frank Blades, the editor of the Fivepenny Piece website.
I was born in Whitley Bay, along the coast from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and currently live in Somerset, a few miles south of Bath.
So, what has that to do with Lancashire? Well, in 1969, my family relocated from Northumberland to Salford - and I spent all my school days in that dirty old town. St Pauls CE School in Kersal led to Salford Grammar School. That was devastated in Labour's murder of the grammar school system and I spend four pointless years in the hastily re-named Buile Hill High School. Released from there in 1977 with four O Levels, I spent three happy years across the field at Pendleton VIth Form College where they re-built my education, re-sitting failed O Levels, taking two at A Level and eventually one at degree level in Nottingham.
My family are still living in Salford, and I have moved back there on three occasions over the intervening years. I worked for a while in a games store the Arndale Centre in Manchester (before the IRA blew it up), and a decade later as a sales rep based in Salford travelling across the North West. My last return to Salford was ended when I moved to Bristol in 1996, and I finally left the smoke and soot behind.
I ended up as Fivepenny Piece webmaster rather by accident; bequeathed the website as a job-lot when the originator died in a RTA. Paul Gunningham did a great job with the website, and I hope that I - with Margaret Meeks' help - have managed to build on that.

Hi .
My Memories of the 5pp, are of spending many happy hours travelling all around the North West and further afield following the Band, usually setting off from here in Southport after a days work. Happy Days though, the Concerts would make the journey well worth it, often not arriving back Home until the early hours of the Morning, to be faced with a five thirty a.m. or so start at Work again the following Day. As I have said Happy Days, and would I do it all again? well! I think I might just do that.
Carry on what you are doing Frank, and I'm sure with Margarets backing, this site can only get better.
Regards to all Kevin
