It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Eddie Crotty - founder member and much loved singer, songwriter and funny man of the group. He had been ill for some time and passed peacefully away at the weekend in Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport. Please feel free to leave your comments here or on The Fivepenny Piece Blog at www.somersetmade.co.uk/5pp/blog/index.php.

any way u can get CD's of ALL ur music ? Lost all my LP's... We get this question over and over again. Can I refer you to the Thread "What Fivepenny Piece albums are available?" under 'Ask The Band'. You may, of course, be able to recoup your lost vinyl LPs through eBay or the likes.

Owd Rimbant? By 'eck; that's going all the way back to the first album!
In fact, the song was only ever released on the first album, and has never been released on CD at all...and as far as I understand it, there are no plans for a re-issue (at this present time!)

Gigs?

The Fivepenny Piece have retired! (that's the official line!).
In saying that, there are far too many new releases coming out for a band who have retired!!!
As for gigs, the official line is the same - The Fivepenny Piece have retired. However, they have been known to sneak out on very rare occasions for a bit of a live reunion.
The last such event was John and Lynda's 'A Night Of Nostalgia' at the Broadoak Hotel in Ashton-under-Lyne in September 2008. Previous shows have also included John's grandson Matthew, and gave rise to the 2007 'Where It All Began' album.
So don't expect any major tours; that won't happen. But keep half an eye on the website and maybe - if you're lucky - we might get another show or two before they really retire!

Am I correct that this is the only album that contains the track "Up North". If available on another album, can anyone advise?? I am after a copy of that song (or lyrics) in any format - preferably mp3 but vinyl will be just as good as I have a USB turntable. (recommended !!!) ANY HELP APPRECIATED !!! 'Up North' was a Dave Dutton - Bernard Wrigley composition, and The Fivepenny Piece did only record it on the 'Life Is A Game Of Chance' album. But, a little bit of searching, and I found that Bernard Wrigley also recorded this track himself, and released it on his 2005 album 'God's Own County'. And that IS available - you can buy that from Bernard's website bernardwrigley.blogspot.com.

Can’t believe it, woke up at 6:00 am reciting the lyrics to "The Battle of Hastings", not a song I know but wot great work. My father loved the band and I'll be telling him all about this web site now. May be I haven’t looked hard enough but who wrote this lymric/poem? Steve - 'The Battle of Hastings' is on the band's 2007 album 'Where It All Began' which is availabile from the band shop on the Fivepenny Piece website. As for the lyrics - check the Lyrics page on the Fivepenny Piece website, and you'll find a link to the Monologues website which has the lyrics waiting for you!

My take on the copyright is that, if I have an original copy of the album on vinyl, transferring it to CD is merely changing it from one medium to another, more durable one. I have already paid to listen to the music once. Anybody disagree? Of course I do! 'Ripping' from vinyl to CD for personal use is perfectly legal. There are legitimate reasons for making a CD copy from a vinyl record; this is covered by the legal concept of "fair use", which permits making personal backups of products including vinyl albums. I have no argument with that... However, once you offer these copies to other people (even free of charge) you are leaping straight into the stormy seas of music piracy. Copying material that you don't own the rights to, or haven't got permission to copy from the copyright holder, is illegal. It stops being "ripping" and starts being 'ripping off". And as Administrator of this Forum, it would be remiss of me not to point this out. Regardless of what I feel about it, even what the Fivepenny Piece feel about it (after all it's their songwriting and performance royalties you are by-passing) - EMI would undoubtedly take a dim view on the whole procedure. And - having seen Watchdog last week - the whole industry is beginning to take the issue of piracy a lot more seriously than in the past, so I would strongly advise against it. (Especially having now advertised yourself on the web!) So, how can fans get hold of these songs? Well, buy the vinyl second hand (and then you have the right to make your own CD copy), hassle EMI into re-issuing albums or just hope that the John decides to include the song on whatever future albums he is planning for the band. [ What do I feel about it? Well I am a professional songwriter and performing myself, and would hate to see my hard-earned royalties (meagre as they are!) going astray!]

Life Is A Game Of Chance on CD?
That is news to me. I wasn't aware it was ever released on CD.
If you can confirm that you had this album on CD, then I will add it to the Fivepenny Piece discography.
And if anyone else out there knows of anything missing from the website - please let me know!

Personally I'm waiting for some bright spark to come up with a The Fivepenny Piece tribute band. Daft idea, I know. It'd never work! (That's what they said about my Wurzels tribute band, and we played over 100 gigs this year!). I'd have a go myself if it wasn't for the slight geographical problem of me living at the other end of the country

Hi Patricia, The orginal version of 'I'm Powf*gged' appeared on the LP 'Songs We Like To Sing', and on the two compilation LPs 'The Very Best Of The Fivepenny Piece' (NOT the CD of the same name) and 'Lancashire My Lancashire'. All never released on CD, so no help there... However, a different version, featuring Lynda as well as Eddie on vocals, appears on the Lanky Spoken Here LP and CDs. Now the Lanky Spoken Here CDs, released by EMI, while not currently being sold on the Fivepenny Piece website, is still to be found on Amazon website www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00008Y2J3?ie=UTF8&tag=somersetmadel-21&linkCode=as2&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B00006JS50. This is the 2nd Release with the famous "Lankyphone" course in the Lancashire dialect included. PS to all readers: The censored spelling of the song title is not down to the prudishness of Patricia or myself - rather the American programmers of the Forum software who obviously see the word "f*g" as being particularly rude!

Your "Harold Got Shot in The eye" song would be the monologue 'Battle Of Hastings 1066'. You can find the full lyrics/words here monologues.co.uk/Battle_of_Hastings.htmThat song IS now available. As well as being on the long-deleted 'The Fivepenny Piece On Stage' LP, a new version was included on the live CD 'Where It Al Began' recorded last year. And that is available from the Fivepenny Piece website shop. As for "Sylvest" - that would be 'My Brudda Sylvest' - released on 'The Fivepenny Piece On Stage' LP, the Very Best Of The Fivepenny Piece' LP (NOT the CD!) or the 'Better Than Ever' CD (which I have been told is worth avoiding!). All long deleted, I'm afraid. Neither are Fivepenny Piece-compositions, and you might find those songs appearing on releases by other artists (although obviously inferior versions to the Fivepenny Piece versions . As for finding the old vinyl LPs - kevmacker is correct; your best bet seems to be eBay at the moment.

Sylvia, I'm afraid that the 'On Stage Again' album is not available on CD. Most of the older Five Pennypiece albums are still under the original EMI record contract, so a re-issue can only happen if they deam it is commercially viable to do so - and bear in mind a re-issue normally means remastering and repackaging, so it isn't normally a cheap option. So unless those nice people at EMI change their minds, I'm afraid "Piddling Pete" remains solely on vinyl. regards, Frank 5pp.co.uk Webmaster *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* The Fivepenny Piece new album 'A Special Child' - out now! www.5pp.co.uk *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

No better way to start a discussion that this one...
My favourite is the epicly titled 'Pete Was A Lonely Mongrel Dog Who Lived In Central Wigan'
Great fun lyrics, and a lovely melody.

I am Frank Blades, the editor of the Fivepenny Piece website.
I was born in Whitley Bay, along the coast from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and currently live in Somerset, a few miles south of Bath.
So, what has that to do with Lancashire? Well, in 1969, my family relocated from Northumberland to Salford - and I spent all my school days in that dirty old town. St Pauls CE School in Kersal led to Salford Grammar School. That was devastated in Labour's murder of the grammar school system and I spend four pointless years in the hastily re-named Buile Hill High School. Released from there in 1977 with four O Levels, I spent three happy years across the field at Pendleton VIth Form College where they re-built my education, re-sitting failed O Levels, taking two at A Level and eventually one at degree level in Nottingham.
My family are still living in Salford, and I have moved back there on three occasions over the intervening years. I worked for a while in a games store the Arndale Centre in Manchester (before the IRA blew it up), and a decade later as a sales rep based in Salford travelling across the North West. My last return to Salford was ended when I moved to Bristol in 1996, and I finally left the smoke and soot behind.
I ended up as Fivepenny Piece webmaster rather by accident; bequeathed the website as a job-lot when the originator died in a RTA. Paul Gunningham did a great job with the website, and I hope that I - with Margaret Meeks' help - have managed to build on that.
